First Appearance

Update 0.8.0

A Compass is a Redstone-related Item which was added in Update 0.8.0.

Obtaining[]

Compasses are obtained mainly through Crafting. After Update 1.0.4, Compasses can also be Traded for using Emeralds.

Crafting[]

  • Iron Ingots + 1 Redstone => 1 Compass
  • Paper + 1 Compass => Empty Map with Indicator
  • 1 Map + 1 Compass => Map with Indicator (In an Anvil)

Usage[]

The main use of the Compass is to point to the world's spawn point, which is useful in case the Player gets lost. The Compass only points toward the original spawn point, not toward a spawn point set by Sleeping, thus reducing the usefulness of it for some players.

To use a Compass the Player must either hold the Compass, or at least have it placed in the Hotbar.

Trivia[]

  • Since the Compass only points towards the world's original spawn point, Players are often forced to create a base near it. Although, the spawn point that the Compass points to can be adjusted by using Commands.
  • Both the Clock and the Compass were added in Update 0.8.0, being the first Redstone items added to Minecraft.
  • The Compass has a very similar Crafting recipe to that of a Clock, though the Clock uses Gold Ingots instead of Iron Ingots.
  • In the Nether and The End the Compass will simply spin around in random circles. This effect is neutralized when returning to the Overworld.
