Dolphins are Neutral Mobs added in Update 1.4.

Spawning

Dolphins spawn in Ocean Biomes. They spawn by groups of 3 or 4. Dolphins are unable to spawn in Frozen Ocean Biomes.

Behaviour

Dolphins swim around erratically, and occasionally jump out of the Water and land back in. When the player swims with them, dolphins can push the player and give them a boost, so the player can move even quicker than on earth. Dolphins will also attack mobs in the water that attack the player. Dolphins “play” with items that are dropped in the ocean. They chase nearby Boats. If provoked a dolphin will attack the player and nearby dolphins will join in, similarly to Zombie Pigman. If the Player feeds Fish to a dolphin, the dolphin will swim away, leaving a trial of white smoke behind it. After a short period of time the dolphin will stop and the Player should feed it again. If repeated enough times, the dolphin will lead the player to an underwater Generated Sturcture. 

Trivia

  • Dolphins are the first underwater neutral mobs to be added.
  • They are the third mobs so far to be provoked in groups if one is attacked.
  • Dolphins are the only underwater mob to help the player when swimming by pushing him/her.
